# Horror Action Bar - line list
#
# This is a STARTER SET of original lines. Review and replace this wording with your own
# before using this mod for real - it exists to demonstrate the format, not as final copy.
#
# Messages appear as a transient flash above the hotbar (the action bar), never added to chat
# history. Its voice is deliberately LONGER and NARRATIVE - describing something happening or
# having happened, rather than addressing the player directly. (The separate "Horror Chat
# Messages" mod has its own line pool with the opposite, short/direct-address voice - the two are
# independent mods, not channels of this one.) Keep lines short enough to read comfortably before
# the action bar text fades - one clause or one short sentence, not a paragraph.
#
# Format:
# - Lines are grouped into categories, each introduced by a bracketed header on its own line,
# e.g. [underground]. Every line after a header (until the next header) belongs to that
# category.
# - Blank lines and lines starting with '#' are ignored.
# - The optional placeholder {player} is replaced with a player's name (see the usePlayerName
# config option) - used more sparingly here than you might in a direct-address mod, since this
# channel is about the scene, not the player.
#
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# SITUATIONAL CATEGORIES - one of these is picked based on what's true for the player right now.
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# [general] - always-eligible fallback, used when no situational category matches.
# [underground] - player has no sky access and it's dark around them (cave, mine, enclosed
# unlit space).
# [night] - it's nighttime in the player's world.
# [long_session] - player has been connected for a while this session.
# [still] - player has barely moved for a while.
# [alone] - singleplayer, or the only player currently online.
# [low_health] - player is currently low on health, or took damage recently.
# [deep] - player is at or below Y=0 - stricter/rarer than plain [underground].
# [deep_night] - it's close to true in-game midnight - stricter/rarer than plain [night].
# NOTE: this means "the deep part of the NIGHT", not "deep underground AND
# night" - for that pairing see [deep_midnight] below.
# [mountain] - player is standing high up and out in the open: above sea level by a good
# margin, under real sky, and meaningfully higher than the terrain around
# them. Peaks, ridges, and the top of anything they built that tall. Does not
# fire for flying over low ground, for being inside a hollowed-out mountain,
# or in dimensions with no sky (Nether/End).
# [respawn] - not situational: a small dedicated pool for the note shown a short while
# after the player respawns from death. Never chosen by normal matching.
#
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# COMBO CATEGORIES - for when TWO situations are true at once.
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Normally one situational category is picked and the others are ignored. Combos exist so that
# specific meaningful pairings get a line written about the pairing itself instead. When a combo's
# two source situations are both true AND it has lines here, it is PREFERRED over single-category
# selection. Emptying a combo's section below cleanly turns that pairing back into normal
# single-category behaviour - nothing breaks.
#
# These are hand-written whole sentences like every other pool. Nothing is stitched together from
# fragments at runtime, so write them as complete thoughts about the specific pairing.
#
# [mountain_night] - [mountain] + [night]: exposed on high ground after dark.
# [mountain_alone] - [mountain] + [alone]: exposed on high ground with nobody else online.
# [deep_midnight] - [deep] + [deep_night]: far underground during the true-midnight window.
# [deep_alone] - [deep] + [alone]: far underground with nobody else online.
#
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# PLACEHOLDERS - usable in ANY category's lines.
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# {player} - a player's name (see usePlayerName).
# {biome} - the player's current biome, e.g. "Frozen River".
# {item} - the item currently in the player's main hand, or "empty hands".
# {depth} - a QUALITATIVE phrase describing how far down the player is. Never a number: raw
# Y coordinates read as debug output and break the voice everything else is written
# in. Which phrase pool is used depends on the player's real Y level:
#                Y 32 and above   -> [depth_shallow]
#                Y 0 to 31        -> [depth_buried]
#                Y -1 to -32      -> [depth_deep]
#                below Y -32      -> [depth_abyssal]
#
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# DEPTH PHRASE POOLS - fragments, not lines.
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
# The four [depth_*] sections below are NOT standalone messages and are never shown on their own.
# Each entry is a lowercase sentence fragment that gets substituted wherever {depth} appears.
#
# WRITING RULE: every fragment must read correctly after the words "You're ___". That is the
# grammatical contract the lines using {depth} are written against. Keep them lowercase and
# unpunctuated so they slot into the middle of a sentence cleanly.
#
# Unrecognized headers are ignored entirely (so a typo'd category silently loses its lines -
# double check the key spelling matches one of the ones above).

[general]
Something changed in the room just now.
The silence had a shape to it, just for a second.
A shadow moved that shouldn't have.
Somewhere nearby, a torch went out on its own.
The air felt colder for exactly one breath.
The {biome} looks different than it did a moment ago.
That {item} in your hand feels heavier than it should.

Something dug these walls long before you arrived.
A draft moves through stone that shouldn't have any gaps.
The dark here has a weight to it.
Your torchlight doesn't reach as far as it should.
You're {depth}, and the {item} in your hand is the least of what's down here with you.

[night]
The moon looks the same, but something under it doesn't.
The night stretched a little longer than the clock says.
Something crossed the treeline without a sound.
The stars are in the wrong place tonight.
Every shadow is a little too long right now.

[long_session]
The clock outside has moved further than the one in here.
You've worn a path into this world without noticing.
This session has lasted longer than most people's patience.
Time keeps slipping past the loading screen.
Something has been keeping pace with you for hours now.

[still]
The last footprints you left are still settling.
Dust is starting to gather where you're standing.
Something is studying the shape you're making right now.
The world is waiting to see if you'll move first.
A shadow paused exactly where you did.

[alone]
There were two sets of tracks leading here. Only one leaves.
The player list says one name. The room disagrees.
Someone else's door was already open when you got here.
This world remembers other players. Not fondly.
A presence lingers where the last player stood.

[low_health]
Something almost had you, {player}, and it noticed.
The last hit left more than a mark.
Your heartbeat is the loudest thing in the room right now.
Whatever hurt you is still deciding if it's finished.
That was closer to the end than you realized.
You're still holding that {item}. It won't help now.

[deep]
You're {depth} - further than most people go on purpose.
The stone above you has been undisturbed until now.
Nothing that lives at this depth expects visitors.
Whatever carved this deep didn't need light to do it.
You're {depth}, and the weight of all of it presses in, just slightly.

[deep_night]
It's the dead center of the night now, and something noticed the timing.
This is the hour the {biome} keeps its secrets worst.
Midnight came and went, and something stayed behind with it.

Nothing stands this high without being seen from somewhere.
From up here you can see everything. Something appreciates the arrangement.
The {biome} spread out below you is being watched too. Just less closely.
Whatever is looking for you doesn't have to look very hard right now.

[mountain_night]
You're a silhouette up here tonight, and silhouettes get noticed.
Nothing else is standing this high in the dark. Nothing that should be.
The whole {biome} is black below you, and one part of it is looking up.
Up here after dark you aren't hidden. You're displayed.
Every light you can see from this height can see you back.

[mountain_alone]
The only figure on this peak is you. Something took a second look to be sure.
Nobody else is up here. Something climbed anyway.
You can see for miles, and there is nobody in any of it. That was checked.
Alone at this height you aren't hard to find. Only hard to reach.
Someone stood exactly here before you, and they were alone too.

[deep_midnight]
You're {depth}, and it's the dead center of the night up there. Both were noticed.
Midnight came and went above you. Down here only one thing marked the difference.
You're {depth} at the worst hour to be, and something keeps the same schedule.
The surface is as dark as it gets tonight, and you're somewhere darker still.

[deep_alone]
You're {depth}, and the only other sounds down here aren't yours.
Nobody else is online. That stopped being reassuring several floors ago.
You're {depth} with nobody above to notice if you don't come back up.
The last one to come this far down was alone too. That's the pattern.
Something followed you down and waited for you to be the only one left.

[respawn]
Back again?
That didn't take long.
You came back. Not everyone does.
Still you. Mostly.
Welcome back, {player}. It missed you.

# --- Depth phrase fragments. Must complete the sentence "You're ___". See the header above. ---

[depth_shallow]
barely under the surface
only a little way down
close enough to the daylight to still smell it
shallow enough that someone up there could hear you

[depth_buried]
deep enough that the daylight gave up following
under more stone than you walked past to get here
far enough down that the sounds from above stopped arriving
buried deeper than anything up there was meant to find

[depth_deep]
far enough down that no light has ever reached
past the point where the stone stopped being ordinary stone
below every tunnel anyone ever bothered to map
deep enough that the dark here has never once been disturbed

[depth_abyssal]
deeper than most ever have a reason to go
as far down as this world will let anything go
at the bottom of everything, with all of it overhead
somewhere the world was never expecting a visitor
