"Before names were forbidden, some still dared speak to tombs. They did not seek life. They sought to hear the memory that stone refused to forget."

They were not yet called necromancers - the word itself did not exist, or did not yet carry the weight we know it by. The texts name them the Echo-Bearers: solitary, marginal individuals, who lingered near tombs far longer than those who mourned, long after families had turned away and taken up the path of the living once more.

Some carried a broken ankh, found in the rubble of a temple older than themselves, or stolen from a dead man who no longer had use for it. Others carried nothing at all: they simply laid a palm against the bare stone, at length, without any other gesture - not to draw anything from it, but to remain in contact with what it held, the way one places a hand on the shoulder of someone one no longer knows how else to console.

"I laid my palm on the worn slab. A tremor passed through me, deeper than the stone's cold. A voice - not a sound, a suspended thought, as though it had taken the shortest path to bypass my ears - whispered to me: You are not the one I was waiting for. But I remember all the same."

These first echoes were not summoned. They were not called by a word, a gesture, a demand. They came of their own will to those who knew how to stay silent long enough to stop being in a hurry, long enough for silence to stop being an emptiness and become a presence.

The Watchers? They still watched, in those days. But they said nothing. Perhaps they did not yet know what this would become.

A man stopped, one day, before a bare tomb - a simple slab, unadorned, unnamed, the kind forgotten within a generation for lack of descendants to visit it.
He laid no offering, spoke no word. He did something - no one knows quite what anymore, the accounts diverge, contradict one another, erase each other across successive copies - and remained there for long hours, motionless, as though absorbed into the stone itself.

Legend has it that the undead prowling around him that night drew back on their own, as though they simply could no longer see him, as though he had ceased to exist for their damaged senses.

"They did not wish to command the dead. They wished for the dead to hear that they were remembered - without ever having to say it aloud, without ever needing a word that, in any case, would no longer have meant anything to them."

His name was erased from every known archive, whether by will or by the wearing of time, no one knows anymore. But the gesture itself survived, passed on in hushed voices among a few Echo-Bearers, hand to hand, never set down on stone.

"Those who wish to see the undead are blind. I wish to hear them when they no longer say anything - that is where everything truly happens, in that silence."

They were not yet dangerous, in those days. But the world was beginning to feel their cold, that particular way they had of lowering a room's temperature without any wind entering it.

"It is said that some adopted a precise posture, held something in hand, before a particular tomb... and that no undead came to trouble their presence anymore, as though their very silence had become a kind of shield.
But no one, in these fragments, ever wished to specify which tomb, or how - out of caution, perhaps, or out of respect for something that may not have deserved to spread too quickly."
