[c=#2dba69]The Fragments of Erdos - Part 4
The Remanence[/c]

[c=#a8c8e8]I am not the one to listen to. My voice is not what matters.
What I carried was never the message. Only the trace.[/c]

I went as far as I could with this bone flute, along roads I could no longer retrace today, through study halls whose faces - the ones once trained there - I eventually forgot entirely, in lands whose living tongue I sometimes didn't even speak, but whose silence I came to learn all the same, for it never changes so very much from one place to the next. Further, perhaps, than many of those who wrote, taught, built entire libraries to hold onto what they feared to see disappear. They had the bound parchment, the rare ink, sometimes even gold for the wealthiest among them. I had only a breath, and the patience to begin it again as many times as it took, season after season, never quite granting myself any rest.

And yet, despite all those years, I never managed to play the sequence to its end without trembling. I came close, note after note, season after season - I could almost feel the shape it was meant to take, the way one feels the shape of an object beneath a cloth before having seen it. But something, always, slipped away just before the end. A breath too short. A hand not quite ready. Or perhaps, more simply, it was never mine to finish.

You who have consumed all these fragments, who have carried a little of me and much of those whose names I never even knew - ideas gathered in halls that may not even exist anymore today, collapsed beneath hills that grew over them without knowing what they covered - you now carry enough of this scattered memory to finish what I could not. It is no accident that the thread ends with you. Nothing in what I do has ever truly relied on chance.

The sequence I finally learned, note after note, hall after hall, over all those years when I had nothing but a bone flute and the stubbornness to keep going, you already carry within you without knowing it - it slipped into your memory as you consumed these fragments, just as it slipped into mine, place after place, long before I understood what I was learning myself.

Hold your flute. Stand before a lectern - it doesn't matter which one, whatever pages it holds or doesn't. Play before it. You have nothing left to learn: the right breath will come on its own, as it came to mine, without my ever truly managing to explain it to anyone.

If your breath does not tremble, something within you grows clearer - as though every moment lived since mattered a little more than before, as though time itself paused for a moment in its passing. This is not a gift given to you. It is a remanence: what remains, and continues to act, long after the note has faded - much like an idea one believed forgotten comes rushing back all at once, years later, as clear as the day it was first thought.

I will never know whether you succeeded. I am no longer there to hear it, in a way, even if a part of me continues to exist in every parchment someone, somewhere, consumes. But if an echo ever returns to you, one day, in a place you will be no more able to name than I was able to name mine, it will not be me you hear.

It will be the world remembering itself, through you - as it once remembered itself, for a time, through me, and as it will continue, long after the two of us are gone, through someone whose name neither of us will ever know.
